Holi has a historical and spiritual significance and is cited in many ancient Hindu types of literature. According to a legend, there was a king named 'Hiranyakashyapu' . But Prahlad, the king's own son, refused to obey his father and turned into a lush devotee of Lord Vishnu. This left the king infuriated. He asked her sister 'Holika', who possessed the boon of being resistant, to pulverize Prahlad. Holika, with Prahlad in her lap, took a chair in a blazing fire. She was sure she could never be harmed by the fire, but that time she was misconceived and burnt to death, and Prahlad walked from fire. It's thought the festival got its name from this...
